Mangoes for Breakfast
ART
My name is Kerry Ann Christelow
Being an emerging artist with life experience in your wake, puts you in a unique place - bags of knowledge and loads of baggage! Coming to this point has been like turning an oil tanker, long and laborious but, none of it time wasted. Realising that time flies faster the older you get gives a sense of urgency to anything you do in future. The oil tanker has turned!
The idea of Mangoes for Breakfast came about as a blanket term for anything that I might turn my hand to after leaving a thoroughly serious, stressful job. It is conceptual rather than literal. It's expressive of that sense of doing something different and having a choice in what that is. When my eldest grandson was little, his choice of mangoes for breakfast was unusual. The phrase stuck with me as a metaphor for being unique, curious, positive and not accepting the norms of either self or expression. Mangoes grow in sunny places and, generally speaking, a bit of sun makes us all feel better as it warms us and brings the joy of light.
My art has taught me that we reap life's rewards by expressing ourselves in surprising and unexpected ways. The alternative is that we are constrained by the rigidity of 'normality' and we don't live at all.
Art is a serious subject but it's also fun and I look forward to sharing my voyage with you.
